How it works
- 1Eligibility assessmentAfter payment you're added to the client portal. We review your nationality, residency status, income, and NIF situation to assess which bank is the right fit and what track (remote vs. in-person) is available to you.
- 2Tailored document checklistWe send you a personalised checklist — different for EU/EEA citizens versus non-EU nationals. We tell you exactly what the bank needs and in what format (no surprises).
- 3Document reviewWe check every document before it goes to the bank — catching translation issues, format errors, and gaps that typically trigger rejection or delays.
- 4Application submittedWe coordinate the submission with the bank on your behalf. For remote accounts, we manage all bank communication in Portuguese. For in-person, we brief you on exactly what to bring and say.
- 5Compliance reviewThe bank runs its internal KYC/compliance check — standard for all non-resident applicants. We stay in contact and respond to any bank queries promptly on your behalf.
- 6Account activatedYou receive your Portuguese IBAN (PT50 format), debit card, and online banking access. Cards are delivered by mail worldwide for remote accounts.
Eligibility requirements
Portuguese banks apply minimum financial thresholds for non-resident account opening. Here's what you'll generally need:
Meet one of these:
- Passive income €920+/month (pensions, rental income, dividends)
- Salary or invoices €870+/month
- Savings of €35,000 or more
- Property purchase documentation in Portugal
Meet one of these:
- Passive income €920+/month
- Monthly income €5,000+/month
- Savings of €35,000 or more
- Property purchase documentation in Portugal
- Proof of intention to relocate (visa application, etc.)
Not sure if you qualify? We assess your situation during the intake. Many clients who thought they didn't qualify found a path through the right bank and documentation strategy.

- 🛂Valid passport — Scanned copies only; no photos. Must be valid for at least 6 months.
- 🏠Proof of home address — Utility bill or bank statement from your current country of residence, dated within the last 3 months.
- 💼Proof of income — Pay slips, employment contract, freelance invoices, pension documentation, or investment/rental income evidence. Last 3 months minimum.

What's included
- 🎯Bank selection — Not all banks accept non-residents, and not all offer remote opening. We match your profile (nationality, income, NIF status, residency intent) to the right bank — avoiding wasted applications.
- 📋Document checklist & review — We send a tailored checklist and review everything before submission. The most common reason accounts are rejected is missing or incorrectly formatted documents — we eliminate that risk.
- 🇵🇹Portuguese-language liaison — We communicate with the bank in Portuguese on your behalf. Banks are more responsive when communication is in their language, and compliance teams move faster when they don't have to translate requests.
- 🔒Compliance guidance — We prepare you for the bank's KYC process, which is standard but can feel opaque. We know what triggers a compliance hold and how to address it before it happens.
- ⚡Remote or in-person — Remote opening is available for most profiles via Novobanco and selected partners. In-person is available at Millennium BCP, Santander, and Caixa Geral de Depósitos branches. We advise which is faster for your situation.
- 🔐Client portal — Track progress, upload documents, and message us directly throughout the process.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a NIF before opening a bank account?
Yes — a Portuguese NIF is required by all banks. If you don't have one yet, we recommend getting it first (or bundling both services). Our NIF Registration service takes 1–2 weeks and is €95. Ask us about a combined package in the portal after purchasing.
Can I open a Portuguese bank account without living in Portugal?
Yes. Non-residents can open accounts in Portugal. Remote opening is available through selected banks (primarily Novobanco) for qualifying profiles. In-person opening at a branch remains an option for all banks and is typically faster (3–4 days vs. 2–4 weeks remotely).
Which bank will I open with?
We assess your profile first and recommend the right bank. For remote accounts, Novobanco is the primary option. For in-person, Millennium BCP, Santander Totta, and Caixa Geral de Depósitos are all available. The bank choice depends on your nationality, income level, and residency intent.
What income or savings do I need?
For EU/EEA citizens: €870+/month income or €920+/month passive income or €35,000+ in savings. For non-EU citizens: €5,000+/month income or €920+/month passive income or €35,000+ savings — or documentation of a property purchase in Portugal. We assess your specific situation during intake.
How long does it take?
Remote account opening typically takes 2–4 weeks from submission. In-person accounts at a branch can be active within 3–4 business days. The document preparation and review phase with us adds a few days on the front end but significantly reduces the risk of rejection or delays.
What are the bank's own fees?
Our €275 service fee is separate from the bank's own charges. Typical Portuguese bank accounts (Prestige tier) carry a monthly maintenance fee of approximately €8–10/month. There's also a minimum deposit (around €250) when activating the account. We provide exact figures for your chosen bank during intake.
Can I open a business bank account too?
Yes, but Portuguese banks require a personal account to be established first before opening a business account. If you need both, we recommend starting with personal and then proceeding to business — we can assist with both as part of a follow-on engagement.
What if the bank rejects my application?
If the bank declines your application due to an error or omission on our side, we refund in full. If the rejection is due to you not meeting the bank's eligibility thresholds (which we screen for upfront), we work with you to identify alternatives before giving up.
💡 Don't have your NIF yet?
Your NIF is required before any Portuguese bank will open an account. Get it sorted first — it only takes 1–2 weeks and our service is €95.
