Why incorporate in Portugal?

Portugal consistently ranks in the world's top ten for ease of business registration. Here's what makes it stand out for foreign entrepreneurs:

  • 🇪🇺EU single market access — A Portuguese company can trade freely across all 27 EU member states with no additional registration.
  • 💶Competitive corporate tax — 21% on the mainland (14.7% in the Azores, lower still in certain Madeira free zones). One of the lowest in Western Europe.
  • 🚀Startup incentives — Under Portugal's Startups Framework, qualifying companies benefit from reduced corporate tax rates in early years, stock option tax exemptions, and property acquisition waivers.
  • 🌍No foreign ownership restrictions — 100% foreign ownership is permitted. There are no mandatory Portuguese shareholders, no profit repatriation limits, and no nationality-based restrictions on company formation.
  • 🔒Stable, transparent legal system — Portugal's company law is EU-aligned, the judiciary is independent, and the fraud rate is among the lowest in the eurozone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in Portugal to register a company?

Not necessarily. Registration via Empresa Online can be completed remotely. However, all shareholders must have a Portuguese NIF (tax number) and a company bank account must be opened, which typically requires an in-person visit to the bank. Empresa na Hora requires all parties to appear in person at a registration centre.

Do I need a NIF before incorporating?

Yes — every shareholder and company director must hold a Portuguese NIF before the company can be registered. If you don't have one yet, we can handle your NIF registration as part of a bundled package. Ask us via the portal after purchasing.

What are the total government fees?

Government fees are separate from our €800 service fee. Expect approximately: €75 for custom name approval (not needed if you use a pre-approved name), and €360–435 for the company registration itself. Total government outlay is typically €360–510 depending on your choices.

Can a foreigner own 100% of a Portuguese company?

Yes. Portugal has no restrictions on foreign investment or foreign company ownership. A single foreign national can own 100% of a Portuguese Lda or Unipessoal Lda with no Portuguese shareholders required.

How long does the full process take?

From the moment all documents and prerequisites (NIFs, deposit proof) are ready, registration itself takes 1–2 days via Empresa na Hora or 5–10 days via Empresa Online. The full timeline including NIF setup and bank account is typically 4–8 weeks.

Do I need a Portuguese office address?

Yes — a registered office address (sede social) in Portugal is required. If you don't have a physical address, a virtual office or registered agent address is a common solution. We can advise on providers during the intake call.

Will this help me get residency in Portugal?

Company formation alone does not grant residency. However, entrepreneurs with a registered company and demonstrated economic activity can apply for the D2 Visa (Entrepreneur Visa). We offer a separate Visa Roadmap Package that covers this path in detail.
